School Policies with Students Drivers

I  Physical Safety Procedures

  1. Freshmen will not be allowed to drive to school.
  2. In accordance with the Tangipahoa Parish School Board, any student operating any motor vehicle on a school campus must have a valid personal driver’s license, vehicle license, and proof of liability insurance for the vehicle driven.
  3. At the time of student registration, or at the beginning of each school year, each student shall register his/her vehicle and vehicle license number with the principal or his/her designee. The school shall provide a school parking permit to be placed in the window of each student-driven vehicle that has been registered. A copy of the student’s driver’s license and proof of insurance shall be submitted at the time of vehicle registration.
  4. Registration of the vehicle with school officials shall constitute permission by the owner to consent to a search of the vehicle by school officials or other properly authorized individuals when circumstances warrant, in accordance with School Board policy or for health, safety, or security reasons. A student failing to register his/her vehicle shall surrender his/her right to operate vehicles on the school campus. *See additional Search information below.
  5. Once registered, the student will receive a parking hang tag, which is to be hung on the rear view mirror (on the front windshield).  Registration fee is $10.00 for parking hang tags.  If vehicle does not have a hang tag, is parked in the wrong parking spot, or an unregistered vehicle is parked in his/her spot, a warning will be issued for the first offense; on the second offense, the vehicle will be fined $25.00; 3rd offense meet with the principal and  the student will not be allowed to park on campus for remainder of school year. 
  6. Students’ vehicles should be parked in sections assigned as student parking areas. The Field House is OFF LIMITS to students parking during the school day.  
  7. Students must adhere to the speed limit, 10 mph.
  8. If a student operates a vehicle in an unsafe manner on the school campus or at school related activities, the student may lose his/her privilege to operate a vehicle on campus. Any person who observes such actions shall report them to the principal or his/her designee. No more than one warning shall be given to a student concerning unsafe vehicle operation. A second instance of unsafe operation shall result in loss of parking privileges.
  9. Safety rules shall include the following: 
    1. All vehicles shall be parked in the prescribed place designated by the principal and may not be moved during the school day without permission of the principal or his/her designee. 
    2. Vehicles shall be vacated immediately upon arrival and may be reentered only at the time of authorized departure, students will not loiter in cars or parking lot. 
    3. Students shall not sit in cars parked on the campus or on the streets surrounding the school any time during school hours or during school related activities. 
    4. No student may leave school during the school day or during lunch period unless he/she is checked out by his/her parents or legal guardian. If an automobile is used by the student checking out, no one may ride in the automobile except with approval of parents or legal guardians of all passengers, as well as the driver. 
    5. Violation of traffic or school parking rules, unsafe driving on campus or possession of illegal materials in the vehicle (firearms, alcohol, drugs, etc.) shall be cause for revocation of the student’s parking privileges.
    6. Firearms, airsoft, gel/water, toy guns, etc are not permitted on campus.
  10. Students must show respect for pedestrians and duty teachers. 
  11. Students cannot return to the car unless permission is obtained from an administrator or until the end of the school day.
  12. Students who leave campus without permission will be subject to the loss of parking privileges, whether driving or not.  
  13. Students will not loiter in the car before, during or after school.    
  14. No excessively loud music that can be heard more than 50 feet from their vehicle. 
  15. Students will not throw trash, drinks, litter, etc in the parking area at any time.
  16. The sale or transfer of parking permits between students will result in immediate loss of parking privileges.
  17. Ponchatoula High School is not responsible for any items stolen from your vehicle.  You park at your own risk.
  18. Depending on the severity of the violation, there may not be a warning before privileges are revoked. 
  19. Students are not allowed to back into their parking spots. 

II. Tardiness to school: Students must follow all tardy procedures.

 

*SEARCH OF VEHICLES *

The School Board shall require students who bring vehicles on campus to register those vehicles and to provide the school authorities with a consent to search such the vehicle signed by the student, parents and/or owner of the vehicle. Any vehicle parked on School Board property may be searched without consent at any time by a school administrator/designee when such school administrator/designee has articulable facts which lead e the school administrator/designee to a reasonable belief that weapons, dangerous substances or elements, illegal drugs, alcohol, stolen goods or other materials or objects the possession of which is a violation of law, School Board policy or school rules will be found. Searches of vehicles may also be conducted to assure compliance with health, safety, and/or security laws, rules or regulations. Such searches shall be conducted in the presence of the student whenever possible.

If the vehicle is locked, the student shall unlock the vehicle upon request by the school administrator/designee. If the student refuses to unlock the vehicle, proper law enforcement officials shall be summoned and the student shall be subject to disciplinary action for such refusal. Any student not present during the search shall be informed of the search as soon as practicable thereafter.
